Acer (ALi) Chipset Problems
The Acer Laboratories Inc. USB host controller can be difficult to configure. Acer hosts have a documented history for failure with scanners, cameras and other sophisticated USB devices. There are no patches for this host other than those issued by Microsoft. USB problems on Acer motherboards can often be traced to aggressive BIOS settings. If you are still experiencing problems with your Fiberbyte device after exhausting the tips and suggestions in the links above, a PCI/USB upgrade card is the solution. A list of Fiberbyte tested and approved PCI/USB upgrade host controller cards are shown in this link.
Keep in mind that USB 2.0 cards require two (2) IRQs. One IRQ is for USB1.1 functionality and the other is for the enhanced USB2.0 functionality. Make sure that the new card does NOT share an IRQ with any other device and it is generally good practice not to install the new card in the first PCI slot. It is recommended not to buy a VIA based PCI/USB card as testing has proved them to be unreliable on systems with existing USB problems.
